Our adventure started with an exciting journey from the bustling city of Quito to the peaceful town of Tena. From Tena, we embarked on a scenic drive to the Junco River Bridge, where our boat awaited, marking the beginning of our Itamandi Lodge Amazon rainforest tour. As we sailed upstream, the beauty of Itamandi Lodge slowly revealed itself—a perfect blend of eco-friendly design and natural surroundings.
Upon our arrival, we were greeted by our guide for the journey. With a refreshing chicha and delectable green empanadas in hand, he introduced us to the lodge’s eco-friendly ethos and provided essential instructions for our stay at Itamandi Lodge.
Filled with excitement, we made our way to our cozy room. It had everything we needed—a comfy bed, a spacious bathroom, and a lovely dressing area. It was our jungle sanctuary.
Our culinary adventure began with a tasty ceviche appetizer that awakened our taste buds and set the tone for the adventures ahead. Joined by our German companions and my enthusiastic daughter, we hopped on a boat and set off to explore the Amazon rainforest jungle.
Our boat journey led us to a local community, where our guide introduced us to the diverse plants, fruits, and trees that called this place home. We learned about bananas, oritos, and more, gaining a newfound appreciation for their importance. The community warmly embraced us, sharing their culture and traditions. Each member introduced themselves in their native language, offering insights into their culinary and craft traditions.

The day ended with a delicious dinner, and as we went to our room, the soothing sounds of nature serenaded us to sleep. The rustling leaves and the chorus of insects acted as a lullaby, reminding us of the wild beauty surrounding us at Itamandi Lodge.
The next morning, we were awakened by the sweet melodies of birds—a natural alarm signaling the start of another day filled with adventure.
Our itinerary promised an exploration of both low and high forests. As we journeyed, we learned about the region’s flora, witnessed the hard work of leafcutter ants, and spotted intriguing sights, from armadillo nests to feline tracks. Along the way, we caught a whiff of a mysterious monkey, although the monkeys themselves remained elusive. However, a distant sloth bear sighting added excitement to our Itamandi Lodge trip. Our guide’s engaging commentary and handmade native crowns added a touch of fun to our journey.
The final day brought one of our most spectacular adventures—birdwatching at the saladero, a feeding site for parrots and parakeets. Our journey began at dawn, and as we approached the saladero, the distant songs and whistles of birds filled the air. Upon arrival, there was a brief hush—a sign that the birds had sensed our presence. But then, the melodious symphony resumed, and we marveled at the sight of these colorful creatures in their natural habitat at Itamandi Lodge.
