Hacienda Zuleta
Let’s start with one of the most recognized historical haciendas in any Ecuador tour. This 17th-century hacienda has been an important place for several centuries. The construction began to function as a place to shelter from the volcanoes and then as a ceremonial place for the chiefs of the ancient Caranquis. After this area was colonized by the Incas and the Spaniards, the hacienda became property of the family of former president Galo Plaza Lasso.
Here you will find beautiful old rooms, delicious local food with ingredients harvested on the same hacienda, and many fun activities to choose from. You can visit lakes in the mountains, enjoy the beautiful scenery while riding a horse, ride a bike on nature trails, take cooking or embroidery lessons, practice farming activities, spend time with people from indigenous communities, and much more!
Hacienda San Agustín de Callo
This hacienda also has an amazing cultural and historical wealth that blends with incredible natural landscapes on the slopes of the Cotopaxi volcano. Not only will you be able to enjoy beautiful landscapes and luxurious facilities, but you will also be able to feel part of Ecuador’s history by finding perfectly preserved vestiges of the Inca, colonial and republican periods. Check out the best museums to learn about Ecuador’s history here.
The main courtyard contains three different architectural styles. You can appreciate an Inca style of construction from the 15th century, a Spanish colonial style of construction from the 18th century, and a republican style of construction from the 19th century. In this hacienda you can also enjoy horseback riding, mountain biking, trekking, rose planting and hiking while being amazed by the beautiful Cotopaxi volcano. We recommend you include this hacienda on your Ecuador tour!
Hacienda la Andaluza
This hacienda offers beautiful old facilities with an incredible history. Its origin can be traced back to the Inca era because its first owners were Incas who guarded the water sources that came from the snowy Chimborazo volcano. Then it became property of Hernando de la Parra, a captain of the Spanish Crown who worked with the colonizers. After 1771 this hacienda hosted many travelers and even historical figures like Simon Bolivar.
In addition to having the opportunity to be part of this incredible history, you will also be able to enjoy different activities outside and inside the hotel. You can go horseback riding, hiking, meet and interact with farm animals, milk cows, or enjoy the sunset with a campfire, hot chocolate, and marshmallows.
Hacienda la Ciénega
This hacienda has more than 400 years of history, making it one of the oldest colonial haciendas in Ecuador. In 1699, the hacienda was one of the largest and richest estates of the time. After its construction, it became the home of several important historical figures who devoted themselves to the study of the Cotopaxi volcano such as Charles Marie de la Condamine, Louis Godin, Pierre Bouguer, and even Alexander von Humboldt. Inside the hacienda, you will find a room dedicated to this famous explorer and geographer. The hacienda has several trails for horseback riding, hiking, and mountain biking.
